PayPal Commerce Platform becomes a global PSP Partner of Sylius
Get ready for global sales & operations with the most advanced payment solution from the famous fintech giant, now available in Sylius out of the box.

Payment solutions & Sylius

No eCommerce platform can exist without solid integrations with popular payment solutions. Since the beginning of our product’s existence, most Sylius users got used to two natively supported payment methods – Stripe and PayPal Express Checkout. Over the years, many payment gateways plugins have popped up. You can find them in the Sylius Store and even more on the Packagist.

Our Ecosystem has been growing rapidly since the commercial edition Sylius Plus launched in June 2019, and so are our Customers’ demands. That being said, it has become obvious to us that we need to improve the payment service providers (PSPs) landscape. Thus, we have formed a strategic partnership with Mollie this spring. Within it, we can seamlessly serve merchants from most of the key European regions.

However, some Sylius users operate on a larger scale than just Europe. Their customers were missing one very popular and convenient payment method… 🙂

PayPal Commerce Platform to rule them all

PayPal is the most popular Payment Service Provider in the world. Last year, this fintech giant introduced the PayPal Commerce Platform (PPCP) – the most modern and advanced of PayPal’s editions, already used by global IT leaders like Facebook or AliExpress.

We have partnered with PayPal to provide Sylius users with one of the best and most comprehensive payment solutions on the market. With this new strategic partnership and integration, you can scale quickly and let your customers accept and make payments in over 100 currencies across 200+ markets, while PayPal takes care of payment complexity.

Seize the power of a trusted network and offer preferred by 280+ millions of consumers and 24+ millions of merchants worldwide. Execute bank payouts in U.S., U.K., the E.U., Australia, and Canada. Onboard customers, accept payments and manage risk within one robust platform.

Naturally, PPCP is fully PCI DSS and 3DS 2.0 compliant and provides full risk management, incl. customisable fraud tools, and dispute resolution via dynamic APIs.

Seems serious. So, what’s inside?

Intuitive administration tweaks

To maximally ease up the new payment method setup, we have added a button Enable PayPal that shall bring you directly to the merchant’s onboarding page. Once you sign in/up to PayPal and accept all terms & conditions, you shall be moved to the Sylius payment method’s configuration form. As you can see, the flow is officially certified by the vendor.

As an online store owner, you are now also able to generate reports from the payment list…

…and make refunds to your clients’ PayPal wallets directly from Sylius’ admin panel.

Of course, you can also perform these operations in the PayPal panel – everything will be synchronized and visible in Sylius administration.

Improved customer experience

The administration is relevant, but what matters most is your customers’ experience. Sylius’ new default shop view is the place where the real magic happens.

First example? Direct checkout from the product page. Make promotions even more tempting for your clients and let them proceed to payment before the flash sales ends.

If a client is used to paying with PayPal, she or he doesn’t have to search for a preferred method in the checkout anymore and can click directly on the yellow button with a widely recognizable logo on the cart page.

Thanks to PayPal Smart Buttons, the local payment methods are automatically displayed according to the customer’s IP (locale). Whether it is iDeal, Bancontact, SEPA-Lastschrift, Sofort, eps, giropay, BLIK, Przelewy24, MyBank, Venmo, PayPal Credit –  everything is there in over 200+ countries.

Of course, your customers can still pay by internal PayPal transactions and credit or debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, Discover, UnionPay, JCB, Diners Club). According to Statista research from 2018, cards remain the most popular online payment method in our biggest market – France (56%). What’s also interesting is that PayPal is the favorite one among online buyers in the Sylius 2nd largest market Germany (52%).

OK, I love it! How do I get it?

No matter if you are a B2C/B2B merchant or a marketplace platform, you can onboard yourself and your vendors to PayPal directly through Sylius. If you are using the existing basic integration – do not worry, it will continue to work for quite some time, but we encourage you to upgrade as soon as possible. You will find the plugin installation instruction in its README.

PayPal Commerce Platform shall be installed automatically with every new Sylius Standard version, starting from the most recent v1.8.1. The plugin also supports v1.7^, so feel free to use it if you are still relying on a previous edition.

Once you create a new payment method (Enable PayPal), you shall be redirected to the merchant onboarding panel below:

Just follow the instructions there and enjoy!

Automated onboarding is fine, but I want to talk to humans

…And we totally feel you! That’s why from now on, PayPal is providing direct contact details for all Sylius merchants & partners:

  • I am a merchant and my web store is doing less than €10M revenue annually → reach out to this email address;
  • I am a merchant and my web store is doing more than €10M revenue annually → contact our official contact person Tom Suter to discuss a tailored offer. 🙂
  • I am the Sylius agency representative and I want to provide the new integration to my customers → Contact Alessandra Favaro and discuss potential PayPal partnership.

The integration overview and contact details above are to be found on the official PayPal’s Strategic Technology Partner profile and plugin page on our website.

What’s next?

The current scope of the integration is using just one-third of all PayPal Commerce Platform powers. Depending on the popularity of the plugin among Sylius users and both organizations’ roadmaps, together with our new powerful Partner, we are discussing the following for the future:

  • Subscription model billing with recurring payments & invoices;
  • Split payments for the multi-vendor marketplace model.

Read more about the solution here, and as always, let us know your feedback. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support if needed.

PS. Special kudos go to our awesome Solution Partner Monsieur Biz who helped us validate the new integration by enabling it on one of their customers’ production websites. Read more about their exceptional Open Source commitment here.
