Welcome to the summary of May! It has been an exciting month full of upgrades, partnerships, and engaging with the community. From innovative projects and the expansion of our plugin ecosystem to introducing a new Sylius Plus module. Here’s a breakdown of May’s highlights:
We’ve officially said goodbye to PHPSpec across the board, swapping it for PHPUnit in nearly every bundle – from Core to Promotions, Reviews, Locale, and beyond. This massive refactor improves long-term maintainability, test coverage, and onboarding for new devs. On the feature side, Sylius 2.1 is gearing up with ORM 3.3 support, Symfony 7.3 testing, smarter admin navigation (hello, proper “Back” button behavior!), and even sleeker checkout UIs. Meanwhile, the 2.0 branch stays strong with key bug fixes and fresh translations (including Canadian French, Swedish, and Mandarin). We also polished the ecosystem – Mollie got shiny subscription hooks and cleaner refund flows, the Grid and Resource bundles now play better with custom templates, and FrontWing saw a makeover in everything from taxon filters to secure account pages.
TL;DR: less legacy, more power, better UX for devs, merchants, and their customers alike.
This month marked a significant milestone for Sylius with the official announcement of FrontWing, a React.js frontend handled by the Core Team. Moving beyond proof-of-concept, the team released the first unstable version (v0.1), delivering comprehensive eCommerce functionality including homepage, product pages, checkout, and account management built with Remix, Vite, and Bootstrap 5.
Named after the wing of the Sylius swan logo, FrontWing serves as an optional frontend layer that won’t deprecate the existing Twig-based system, ensuring users maintain choice while providing an easy starting point for headless setups. The release eliminates much of the work required to implement headless SPA/PWA frontends with Sylius and is designed to enhance the API experience further.
Future development will focus on frontend server rendering, SEO-optimized architecture, and potentially platform-agnostic support. The community can explore the code on GitHub, join discussions in the #front-wing Slack channel, and follow progress at front-wing.sylius.com.
What’s more, Sylius has achieved a major milestone in global accessibility with the UI and messages now 100% translated across 10 key languages, powered by AI-assisted translations. The complete language coverage includes French 🇫🇷 (including Belgian 🇧🇪 and Canadian 🇨🇦 variants), German 🇩🇪 (including Austrian 🇦🇹 and Swiss 🇨🇭 variants), British English 🇬🇧, Dutch 🇳🇱, Spanish 🇪🇸, and Polish 🇵🇱, with Mandarin Chinese 🇨🇳, Swedish 🇸🇪, and Portuguese 🇵🇹 coming soon.
Beyond expanding language support, the translation process itself received a significant upgrade with the team officially moving away from Crowdin to a streamlined GitHub-based workflow. Contributors can now submit translations through standard pull requests, enabling faster review and merge times while allowing developers to test translations locally and view them in real context.
This change makes translation contributions as seamless as any other code contribution, encouraging broader community participation in making Sylius accessible to merchants worldwide.
The new workflow is fully documented and available for contributors
This month, we embraced “Documentation Driven Development,” starting with a comprehensive docs update that sparked product improvements along the way. Your community feedback drove us to create highly requested guides covering customizing styles, grids, and state machines.
We moved plugin documentation in-house to the official Sylius Docs, making resources easier to find and more user-friendly. This consolidation improves the overall developer experience by centralizing all documentation in one location.
Looking ahead, we’re focusing on actionable cookbooks, cleaner examples, and smoother development paths for building custom eCommerce solutions. 📖 Updated documentation
For too long, content management in Sylius required external tools or community plugins. With Sylius 2.0, we’re changing that by officially adopting the most widely used CMS plugin in our ecosystem.
We’ve brought the plugin into the Sylius organization, completely refactored it, integrated it with the new admin interface, and made it an officially maintained extension. While it’s not a full-blown CMS and doesn’t try to be, it covers essential content needs including dynamic pages, blocks, media, and templates while staying true to Sylius’s core philosophy of flexibility, openness, and developer-first thinking.
The plugin represents our commitment to providing comprehensive solutions within the Sylius ecosystem. We’ve published a detailed article covering the story behind the plugin, its current capabilities, and our future roadmap for development.
Special thanks to all contributors from BitBag for laying such solid foundations that made this transition possible.
Next, we’ve just released Sylius/TestApplication, a new ready-to-use testing app that should make plugin development significantly easier. This officially maintained tool eliminates the need for custom test environments in each plugin repository, addressing common issues like duplicated configuration, inconsistencies, and extra maintenance effort with every release.
The new app accelerates development by reducing manual integration steps – in many cases, you won’t need to touch configuration or Webpack settings at all. Thanks to Symfony Flex and our custom recipes, installing a plugin can now be as simple as running one install command.
This single, reusable environment works out of the box and supports Sylius 2.0. We’ve already tested it internally and successfully integrated it with our CMS Plugin, proving its effectiveness in real-world scenarios.
If you’re developing Sylius plugins, we encourage you to try it out, share your feedback, and contribute to further improvements. Together, we can continue enhancing the developer experience in the Sylius ecosystem.
The latest Sylius Plus release delivers solid improvements across our key modules, focusing on practical enhancements that make daily operations smoother.
B2B Suite received important upgrades, including the ability to assign products per customer group and organization, fixes for tax calculation issues at checkout and in the Admin, and improved compatibility with Marketplace Suite.
Marketplace Suite was polished with fixes for vendor profile update status, replacement of hardcoded classes with parameters for easier customization, and enhanced B2B Suite compatibility.
All Sylius Plus modules are now fully v2-ready, upgraded, and tested for compatibility with Sylius 2.0. These modules are prepared to handle complex challenges, including loyalty programs, access control, multistore operations, and advanced returns management.
Most modules are already available on our public demos at demo.sylius.com, and you can schedule a dedicated demo at sylius.com/try to explore their capabilities in detail.
We’ve introduced Request for Quotation (RFQ) as a new module in Sylius Plus, specifically designed for B2B businesses handling complex, negotiable, or volume-based sales.
The module enables customers to add RFQ requests for multiple products in their cart, set desired quantities, and submit quote requests through a dedicated form that includes contact details and messaging capabilities to outline their specific expectations.
Curious how the RFQ module can support your B2B sales? Check out our detailed article and test it in the Sylius demo
This month saw an impressive new Sylius-powered store go live, demonstrating the platform’s versatility in serving unique market niches and innovative business models.
French publisher Éditions Maïa has created something special with Euthena – a crowdfunding platform that’s changing how books come to life. Built on Sylius and Symfony, this platform creates an ecosystem where readers become partners in bringing new books to market through pre-orders and campaign participation.
What makes Euthena impressive is how it showcases Sylius’s flexibility in handling complex business workflows. The platform manages everything from book pre-sale campaigns to traditional eCommerce for the Éditions Maïa catalog, with intuitive tools that make campaign management straightforward for publishers.
Here’s where it gets really interesting: Euthena handles sophisticated ebook distribution with integrated DRM protection using Readium LCP from the Readium Foundation. This shows how Sylius can be extended to tackle complex digital content delivery while maintaining independence through open-source solutions.
The future looks bright, with plans to expand into multimedia content including video, podcast, and digital magazine distribution. It’s a great example of how Sylius adapts and grows with evolving business needs. Designed by Panda Communication with project management by Alexandre Clament, Euthena demonstrates the power of collaborative Sylius implementations. 👉 euthena.com
Belgian toy retailer DreamLand has launched its completely redesigned website, built using Sylius combined with custom Architect CMS by Inventis. This long-term project brings significant improvements in user-friendliness, speed, and design that customers are already enjoying.
What’s impressive about this implementation is how it demonstrates Sylius’s compatibility with custom content management systems. DreamLand gets the best of both worlds: solid eCommerce functionality from Sylius alongside tailored content management that fits their specific needs. This approach shows how Sylius can integrate smoothly with specialized solutions to handle complex business requirements.
The result? A platform that’s not just functional, but truly delightful to use. 👉 dreamland.be
