A Sylius-based ticketing system for PHPers Summit

The 2018 Challenge

The organizers of the main Summit event needed a new, flexible ticket selling platform. It was necessary due to the growing popularity among Polish public, as well as they really wanted to have a platform which could easily support year-to-year changes.
They’ve been stuck with a ready to use software’s bugs and complexity when it came to customisations. It was almost impossible to implement the workshop register system or ticket reservation system. What is more, it was difficult to host the event webpage and store under the same domain which made it even harder to maintain and scale.

A Customised Solution

Flexibility was a key concept in this project. Adding up the fact we realised it for PHP developers, Sylius turned out to be a perfect solution. In order to make the vision real, Sebastian Dudek – one of PHPers Summit head organizers, asked BitBag for help.

We decided to develop the platform from scratch and teach PHPers team how to handle it in a proper way in the future.

For the base technology stack we 've included:

We created the first MVP version in a couple of weeks time. It consisted of a web page with content management system, custom design (provided by PHPers), and what’s most important – ticket selling system.
A few weeks later, we opened the ticket selling system. The next step was to implement a ticket reservation system, which enabled the organizer sell a limited amount of tickets for workshops.

Thanks to Sylius we implemented a great ticket selling solution in no time, which is really flexible at the same time. It matters a lot as we are going to sell more and more of them in the nearest future.

Flawless Results

In the first 4 weeks, all tickets have been sold without any problem. Event hosts are looking forward to customizing the platform for next editions. There were no complaints from customers side, which unfortunately happened before Sylius was involved.

2021 Perspective

PHPers Summit has been using the Sylius-based solution for all the editions since 2018 and it seems it was a great technology fit. Along the way, they haven’t reported any issues. With the focus on flexibility, the organizers have been able to introduce annual changes to the webpage. They haven’t had any trouble with the traffic either – which is a great news taking into consideration the specifics of a conference ticket selling (a short, but intense peak rather than continuous interest).
