As Sylius’s Preferred Payment Partner, Stripe combines global payments infrastructure with an official, contractual integration within the Sylius ecosystem.

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Headquartered in San Francisco and Dublin, the company aims to increase the GDP of the internet.

Local payment methods
across key European markets

Cartes Bancaires (CB) is France’s largest domestic card network, covering around 60% of online payments and 80% of in-person payments in the country. More than 95% of CB cards are co-branded with Visa or Mastercard. Stripe supports CB directly, alongside Klarna as a BNPL option.

iDEAL | Wero is the most popular payment method in the Netherlands, with more than 60% share of online payments.

EPS in Austria holds more than 18% market share. SEPA Direct Debit is available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Klarna is supported across all three countries under the same Stripe pricing tier.

BLIK is Poland’s largest payment method, with more than 65% share of e-commerce payments. Supported directly by Stripe, alongside Przelewy24.

Plugin
Official integration,

The Stripe plugin is the official Stripe integration for Sylius, actively maintained and released against current Sylius versions. It’s open source, with the full source code available on GitHub for anyone to inspect.

Adaptive Pricing (buyer-local currency)
Setup mode (save card without charging)
Fastest installation path
Manual capture (authorize + capture)
Express Checkout (cart wallet)
Full refunds, webhook-driven state sync

Both gateways support: cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe Link, PayPal, Buy Now Pay Later (Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm), bank redirects (iDEAL, Bancontact, Przelewy24, EPS), and SEPA Direct Debit. The exact methods shown at checkout come from the merchant’s own Stripe Dashboard — the plugin does not hard-code the list.

  • Underlying Stripe APIs: Checkout Sessions (Checkout gateway), PaymentIntents (Web Elements gateway)
  • Supported payment methods: major cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe Link, PayPal, Klarna/Afterpay/Affirm (BNPL), iDEAL/Bancontact/Przelewy24/EPS (bank redirects), SEPA Direct Debit
  • Recurring billing: infrastructure only, via the Checkout gateway – not a full subscription-management layer
  • Refunds: full refunds supported on both gateways
  • Webhooks: webhook-driven state reconciliation on both gateways
  • Multi-channel support – assign the payment method to specific Sylius channels
  • Support for multiple webhook secret keys per gateway
  • Developer-friendly local testing via Stripe CLI webhook forwarding
  • Authentication: Restricted API Keys via the Sylius Stripe App
  • Compatible with Sylius API Platform endpoints for headless/API-driven storefronts
  • Versions supported: Sylius ^2.0, Symfony ^6.4 || ^7.1, PHP ^8.2, stripe/stripe-php ^20.0
Cross-border benefits
Higher revenue
Stripe’s pre-built checkout (Payment Element) increases revenue compared to a custom-built payment form.
Faster repeat checkout
Link autofills payment details for returning customers, reducing friction at the critical moment.
Higher conversion from local methods
Automatically matching the payment method to the customer’s market improves both conversion and revenue.
Fewer missed fraud cases
A large share of cards on the Stripe network have been seen before, making unusual transactions easier to flag.
Automatic fraud reduction
Stripe’s machine learning models (Radar) reduce fraudulent transactions by 32% on average, without manual review.
Prices in the customer’s own currency
Adaptive Pricing automatically displays checkout prices in the buyer’s local currency, reducing friction from unfamiliar conversions.

FAQ

No. A single Stripe account can accept payments from customers in 135+ countries and process 100+ currencies. You don’t need separate accounts per market – Stripe handles cross-border payments through one integration.

This depends on how your store is configured. Stripe supports multi-currency processing, allowing you to charge customers in their local currency while receiving settlement in yours. Whether prices are displayed and converted automatically depends on your store’s currency and localization setup in Sylius – this isn’t something Stripe handles by default, but it can be configured.

No. The official Stripe integration is our recommended, preferred option, but Sylius supports multiple payment providers, including PayPal, Mollie, Adyen, and others already present in the ecosystem. You’re free to choose the provider that best fits your business.

Yes. The official integration supports subscription and recurring payments through Stripe’s billing capabilities.

It depends on your business needs – target markets, business model (one-time vs. recurring), and preferred payment methods. Stripe is a strong default choice thanks to broad currency/payment method coverage and official Sylius support, but other providers in the ecosystem may be a better fit depending on your specific use case. Stripe provides tools like Stripe Tax to help automate tax calculation and collection across jurisdictions, but the merchant remains legally responsible for tax compliance and consumer protection law in each market they sell to. We’d recommend consulting with a tax/legal advisor for your specific markets – Sylius and Stripe provide the tools, but compliance is the merchant’s responsibility.
